Oxandrolone is an oral anabolic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone. It was developed in such a way that it has a very strong separation of anabolic and androgenic action and does not have significant estrogenic or progestational activity. Oxandrolone has a fairly mild effect compared to other oral steroids. It is used to increase strength and qualitative growth of muscle tissue without significant side effects. Milligram for milligram, it shows six times greater anabolic activity than testosterone, with significantly less androgenicity. This drug is very much loved by bodybuilders who follow a diet, and athletes participating in competitions in high-speed/anaerobic sports, where its propensity for net tissue growth (without fat and water retention) fully corresponds to the set goals. Oxandrolone has a modification at the second carbon atom, as a result of which the second carbon is replaced by an oxygen atom, hence the prefix ox in the name Oxandrolone. It is believed that it is this substitution of a carbon atom for an oxygen atom that increases the anabolic capabilities of oxandrolone compared to its parent hormone, dihydrotestosterone.

SIDE EFFECTS
Since dihydrotestosterone is unable to interact with the aromatase enzyme and, therefore, cannot undergo aromatization (transformation) into estrogen, Oxandrolone shares this important feature. Its inability to aromatize into estrogen means the complete exclusion of the possibility of any estrogenic and estrogen-related side effects. Oxandrolone is alkylated on the 17th carbon atom in its steroid structure (the so-called methylation or C17-alpha alkylation) in order to bypass metabolism in the liver and enter the bloodstream to perform its work. Unfortunately, C17-alpha alkylation of oral anabolic steroids is known to exhibit varying degrees of liver toxicity, however oxandrolone has demonstrated much less liver toxicity than most other oral anabolic steroids with C17-alpha alkylation. However, it is important to understand that oxandrolone is not without potential toxicity for the liver, and in this regard, caution should be exercised when using it.
Application
Initially, oxandrolone was prescribed in a dose of 2.5 to 20 mg per day (most often 5-10 mg). As a rule, this drug was recommended for a period of two to four weeks, but sometimes it was taken for three months. The usual dosage for improving physical condition or performance is in the range of 15-25 mg per day and is taken for 6-8 weeks. These protocols are not so far from ordinary therapeutic situations.
